Welded Fly Line Loops - CUT THEM OFF!!

Over here at FRC HQ we often get asked about all things relating to tackle set up, probably the most common question after "what flies do you use" is regarding leader to fly line connections! Most fly lines come with welded loops which are great until they aren't, due to the nature of the loop to loop connection there will be a hinging effect which over time will crack the fly line right behind the welded loop, the first signs of this is usually when the end of your fly line starts to sink, adding mucilin or some other floatant will help but after awhile that will wear off and the fly line will sink.

So, we cut off the welded loop and nail knot a 20 cm piece of Maxima of either 20 or 30lb bs to the end of the fly line depending on the line weight, cut the trim tag as short as you can and trim the fly line flush with the knot, add some uv glue to the knot and smooth over, and then add a micro non slip mono-loop to the end of the Maxima, this will give you a section between the end of the fly line and the micro loop of about 18cm's, you could add a 2mm tippet ring if you prefer that over the mono-loop!

We find this cuts down on the hinging effect giving you a better transfer of power into the leader, a floating fly line that lands more gently and a smoother run through the guides!

With a little practice and a nail knotting tool you can get very small and compact nail knots!

NB: There are many ways to attach a leader to a fly line but this is the one we prefer, if you're unsure about cutting your fly line then stick with your welded loop!
