Line recommendations
Below grain weight and head length guidelines for water-anchored spey style roll casting. Line preference is personal to your casting style and end use, be prepared to experiment.
We preferred: A short (14’-18’) Skagit head 200-250 grains with a 5-10’ polytip/polyleader, head plus tip up to around 25’ and head + tip total weight 250-300gn.
For Scandi or all round applications try a single handed or compact spey or switch style line towards the middle of the grain window and with a short head (<22' head), total head length including tip - if the line system requires one - of 25-30’ (a SH line will probably not require a polyleader).
Overhead single-handed casting: performs well for a rod this length with a punchy WF #4/5 (120-140gr) for upstream dry and nymph. A skagit or scandi head is designed for roll casting and should NOT be cast overhead style.
For rod testing we used flat mono shooting line and a poly tip or poly leader of 5-8’, attached to 17' skagit heads (Maxcatch heads do the job well for little money but you will need to replace the welded loops with small braided loops). If using a poly tip (with a PVC loop both ends) finish off with a short (4-7’) tapered nylon leader for best fly turnover. With a poly leader (PVC loop one end, nylon line the other) simply add an optional tippet ring and a few feet of your final tippet.
For two handed casting use a foregrip of 9-11", rear grip of 3.5-5" - see linked products below.
